Director statement : I make short videos using drawings, animation, costumes and hand-made puppets. My work resembles off-brand observational comedy enacted by hand made anthropomorphized objects. Funny, odd, and occasionally funny ha-ha. The characters reflect on small encounters, how technology mediates intimacy and when commodities become manifest memories. Pop culture is the glue that binds it all together. It acts as a conduit to nostalgia and a metaphor for collective hallucination. Like myself, my characters are consumers of media and participants in a game they don’t quite understand. Comfort Station creates a space for these moments to exist simultaneously in the space of an analogue television broadcast. Bio : Karen Leo is a multimedia artist who makes sculpture and short videos using puppets, costumes and animation. She has exhibited work at galleries and film festivals internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art, Slamdance Film Festival, Homie Gallery, Artists Space, A.I.R Gallery and Guttenberg Arts. Leo is a recipient of a NJ Council on the Arts Fellowship Grant for Film and Video. She attended many schools, but only got degrees from two: School of Visual Arts (BFA) and Columbia University (MFA.) She is a former amateur boxer and a current New York City public school art teacher.
Pebbles Underground is focused on showcasing and promoting experimental, avant-garde, underground, and no-to-low budget projects by artist-humans from all over the world. Absurd, uncanny, witty, humorous, slow-video – all are welcomed, and loved.
Pebbles Underground is an independent project not funded by any government or corporation, and we intend to keep it that way. Main source of funding is personal donations from humans organizing the project, who are artists themselves, and the main drive of the project is formed by the energy and involvement of the organizers, and the public.
