ONLY DARK FROM THE OUTSIDE by Eleonora Privitera, Eugenio Pizzorno
USA (2021-2023)
“Only Dark from the Outside” is a short experimental film based on “Aphorisms on Futurism”, a poem by Mina Loy, first published in “Camera Work” (Alfred Stieglitz) in January of 1914.
Mina Loy ( 1882-1966), was a true cosmopolitan, a radical painter and polyglot poet known for her frank embrace of female sexuality and feminist politics. She joined the futurist movement in 1913, but she quickly encountered conflict regarding the movement’s fascist and misogynistic tendencies. She has been associated with most of the avant-garde literary and artistic movements of the early 20th century: dadaism, surrealism, futurism, feminism, and modernism.
The film stems from a year-long creative interpretation, re-signification, and visual translation of the poem, conducted collaboratively by artist Kris Casey and filmmakers Eugenio Pizzorno and Eleonora Privitera. It was entirely shot on Super 8 film in New York City, in just 2 days.
Bio
Eleonora Privitera is an Italian documentary filmmaker based in New York City.
She started making documentaries to support social movements and people’s struggles against oppression, specifically related to environmental justice and gender issues. In her directorial debut, “Rebirth”, she turns the camera towards her family, embarking on a difficult emotional journey, combining the language of home movies, intimate conversations, and video diaries. In her most recent work, she developed an interdisciplinary approach, involving Poetry, and Body Movement to explore femininity, identity, and memory.
Eleonora Privitera is working on her next film: a cinematic exploration of her female ancestors, the inherited cycles of trauma, and the vastness of her multitudes.
Eugenio Pizzorno is a filmmaker living and working in New York City. His practice is rooted in A/V installation art, philosophy, and grassroots politics. Pebbles Underground is focused on showcasing and promoting experimental, avant-garde, underground, and no-to-low budget projects by artist-humans from all over the world. Absurd, uncanny, witty, humorous, slow-video – all are welcomed, and loved. Pebbles Underground is an independent project not funded by any government or corporation, and we intend to keep it that way. Main source of funding is personal donations from humans organizing the project, who are artists themselves, and the main drive of the project is formed by the energy and involvement of the organizers, and the public.
