“SEA OF SILENCE” (00:13:30) by Jon Cuyson, Philippines, 2021

Synopsis

A silent yet omniscient voice searches the past to understand and reveal intimate connections of family, labor, colonialism, and the sea.

Director’s statement: “SEA OF SILENCE is a short experimental documentary fiction film that interrogates notions of presence and absence, life and death through the reconfiguration of memory. The experimental hybrid film uncovers and reimagines the vestiges of colonial legacies in the archive to form new subjectivities. “SEA OF SILENCE” mixes archival photos and footage to reveal representations of labor to rethink and reframe our understanding of containment and freedom in both the land and oceanic realms of the past and present.”

About the director: “Jon Cuyson is a visual artist living and working in the Philippines. In 2010, he received an MFA from Columbia University in New York. His works employ different techniques and media where he investigates the complex intersections of art, history, culture, and Filipino diaspora.”
