“Suicidal – or just a working class woman caught in the wrong underpants?
In this video, a friend and I re-enact what happened to me at a hospital. Because of my class
background, underwear, work choices, lack of biological family support and general gender
presentation, the psychiatric hospital determined that I had the wrong gender identity. I was
hospitalized against my will for months because sometimes I wear clothes from the men’s
Department. The experience was terrifying, and I think we captured the horror/surreal-ness of the interview.” krissy mahan
Director’s Statement
One method to control populations is to use administrative violence is to
pathologize difference and dissent. In this film, I reenact what actually happened to me in a
psychiatric setting. The clothes I wear provoked a very violent response by medical
professionals – I was locked up and forced to take psychotropic medications. This film uses
experimental visuals to highlight the insidiousness of the therapist’s words.
Bio
Krissy mahan is an abolitionist cultural worker who creates and shares movies
that use humor to address social issues such as accessibility, gender identity, mental health,
immigration, and working class post-industrial cities. A passionate idealist with a flair for the
fabulous, Dykeumentary films are included in international festivals and
community-based/educational settings. She supports the cultural boycott of Israel.
Pebbles Underground is focused on showcasing and promoting experimental, avant-garde, underground, and no-to-low budget projects by artist-humans from all over the world. Absurd, uncanny, witty, humorous, slow-video – all are welcomed, and loved.
Pebbles Underground is an independent project not funded by any government or corporation, and we intend to keep it that way. Main source of funding is personal donations from humans organizing the project, who are artists themselves, and the main drive of the project is formed by the energy and involvement of the organizers, and the public.
