A poetic experimental short using VHS textures, prism-distorted images, and a palette shifting from deep blues to warm yellows, to create a dream-like meditation on motherhood, memory, and cultural identity.
Director’s statement
This film comes from a dream state that is rooted in a poem I wrote during a dark lived experience of becoming a mother during the pandemic in a new country. Now five years later, I re-imagined that dark place through this film performed by a pregnant actor Rosie Wu in which she made for her own unborn child.
Bio
Michelle Siu is a former photojournalist now exploring memory and fantasy through short films based in the UK. She is also experienced in analogue photography practicing wet plate alternative darkroom techniques which informs her cinematography and meditative approach to filmmaking. She has been recognised by the NAHEMI 16mm Kodak Commercial Award and the ARRI Watersprite DoP Challenge. She has worked as a 2nd Assistant Camera on high-end television and feature productions. And is promoting ‘A Love in Three Acts’ her autobiographical photobook and documentary film that combines visual storytelling with atmospheric, immersive cinematic language.

Pebbles Underground is focused on showcasing and promoting experimental, avant-garde, underground, and no-to-low budget projects by artist-humans from all over the world. Absurd, uncanny, witty, humorous, slow-video – all are welcomed, and loved. Pebbles Underground is an independent project not funded by any government or corporation, and we intend to keep it that way. Main source of funding is personal donations from humans organizing the project, who are artists themselves, and the main drive of the project is formed by the energy and involvement of the organizers, and the public.
