In a crowded business district, a man on his way to work crosses the camera’s gaze, abruptly turns around, and leads the viewer to a photo booth. There, hidden behind the curtain, he begins to confess.
Director’s statement
Turning Away explores a form of everyday alienation, shaped by the routines of work, where doubt no longer seems to have a place. Through the gesture of a man who, one morning, turns back before reaching his office, the film questions this movement we follow without thinking: moving forward, moving up, at all costs.
It is the story of a slight rupture — an attempt to interrupt the flow and recover a space to think about the structures that shape our lives.
Bio
Joaquim Bayle is a French filmmaker born in 1990 in northern France. Influenced by skate and underground culture, he began directing self-produced videos on MiniDV, Super 8mm and 16mm, developing his filmmaking practice alongside his work as a creative. His cinema gradually moved toward tragicomedy and hybrid forms. His first short film, GWENDOLINE (2022), following a post-punk band desperately searching for an audience, screened at several A-category festivals and received an Honorable Mention at Slamdance. In 2024, he directed LE PAS DE CÔTÉ, a minimalist dark comedy shot in his hometown of Arras (France).
His latest film, TOURNER COURT (Turning Away), shot entirely on 16mm in Paris, follows a man who deviates from his daily routine and begins questioning the logic of his own ascent. Blending fiction and documentary images, the film marks a shift toward a more personal and diary-like form of cinema.

Pebbles Underground is focused on showcasing and promoting experimental, avant-garde, underground, and no-to-low budget projects by artist-humans from all over the world. Absurd, uncanny, witty, humorous, slow-video – all are welcomed, and loved. Pebbles Underground is an independent project not funded by any government or corporation, and we intend to keep it that way. Main source of funding is personal donations from humans organizing the project, who are artists themselves, and the main drive of the project is formed by the energy and involvement of the organizers, and the public.
