“on being a guest” (00:05:45) by Rebecca Ladida, Canada, USA, 2022

“on being a guest” is a somatic reflection on the ethics and care of being a settler, a tourist, a guest. Far from leaving no trace at all, the artist yet attempts at sweeping their footstep in the white sand desert on Mescalero Apache & Tampachoa lands, as they move through space. The broom being an unequivocal symbol of domestic labor and, also, of cleansing rituals all over the world, the piece may bring attention to the gendered labor that is tending to all our relations.

The video piece is part of Rebecca Ladida ‘s broader transdisciplinary art project titled “Carceral Ecologies: Landscapes for Decolonizing our Relations” which tackles our experiences of colonialism, extractivism, borders and desires.
